The Red Sweater. A true and inspiring story……60 years later!

In the mid 1950’s my mom, Betty left her family home in Saskatchewan and ventured east to Montreal to live with her grandma, work and experience life.  I’m sure it was quite the contrast to her life and upbringing on the prairies of rural Saskatchewan.

She left several younger siblings back at home and one of them was her sister Irene.  In her best attempt at spelling and printing, Irene wrote my mom a letter thanking her for a gift and a letter she had sent.  How exciting it must have been for Irene to receive something in the mail all the way from Montreal!  In this letter, she also asked my mom for a red sweater with buttons down the front for her next gift.  As the story goes, my mom saved all her money she made from working to buy her mom and dad their first “refrigerator” which I’m sure was very exciting and incredibly appreciated.

My mom kept Irene’s letter all these years.  For Irene’s birthday this past December, my mom sent her a special gift.  There was a copy of Irene’s letter along with a beautiful red sweater with of course, buttons down the front.  Mom told Irene she couldn’t remember if she ever did send her one!

There were lots of tears and memories from this gesture.

This story is such a reminder of kindness, love and all the goodness in life that makes us feel grateful and happy.  Taking the time to bring joy to another person carries with it a ripple effect that inspires many others, ourselves included.  I encourage each one of you to keep spreading the kindness and love to others however you can, wherever you are and be a part of making this world a better place.

Here’s to friends, family, awesome stories and goodness!

With aloha,

Caron

Face your fears! My story of “Don’t Hold Back”…….

Today, I am sharing a story with you of how facing our fears can bring about the most unexpected and incredible experiences.

The graphic I have attached may be a bit difficult to read so I’d like to share my story.  Because my story can be anyone’s story.  Of that, I am sure.

I’m sure you have heard the saying that the biggest fears for most people are death and public speaking.   Harsh? Maybe.  Certainly not the case for everyone, but I suspect it is for many, many people.

For a  majority of my life, I was an introvert.  I was rather shy and quiet.  I would certainly be the last one to speak in class while at school (do not make eye contact and you won’t be asked!).  I was always intimidated about what others thought of me and anything remotely associated with speaking in public was as far on the opposite end of my comfort level as one could possibly get.  Even sharing this with you brings back those feelings and emotions.

As an adult, this fear still existed.  As I became more comfortable with my purpose, passion and self, the fear of “speaking up” took more of back seat but it was always lurking around, yes lurking, ugh.  This is why it came as such a surprise to me when I was given the opportunity to present a motivational program to health care employees about 5 years ago and……..I was excited.  The thrill of the opportunity to spread a message of hope, healing and  inspiration to people over-road my fear of speaking.  I had found my calling and something that brought a spark of “what if” to my world.   It was a year after this that I decided to start my own business, A Good & Kind Company, which was in perfect alignment with not only my personal values but also with what I feel the world needs right now.   We need more kindness, compassion, non-judgement, love, peace, gratitude, fun, joy and laughter.   We need it because a lot of the things that we are doing is not working.    We see signs of unhappy people everyday, everywhere we go.

In November 2013, I traveled to Boston to become certified as an Infinite Possibilities trainer, a program developed by Mike Dooley.  Mike is well known as an international best selling author and speaker, from his appearance on “The Secret” as well as his daily “Notes from the Universe”.  While at this event, we were encouraged to sign up for Toastmasters which would provide us with confidence, the ability to connect with an audience and more effectively share our message.  I clearly remember immediately thinking that NO, I was fine and would not need to join.  Thank you anyways!

About a year later, Rob and I secured a one year work visa for Hawaii, yes Hawaii.  This is another story of a life-changing adventure, which I will be sharing.  I worked diligently on my business while there, writing, networking and developing strategies.  I often thought about speaking and that excited me.  Toastmasters popped into my mind one day and by then it was June; our visas expired in October.  I decided to make the call.

The next thing I knew, I was at my first meeting in Waikiki!  I was warmly greeted, got settled in and felt very comfortable.  I wanted to clarify that I would not have to speak and I was assured that  I would be fine.  Things were looking good until…….I was called up to speak during the Table Topics session.   Two things happened after that:  I made them laugh and I won the award for the most “ahs” and “ums”.   I joined Toastmasters then and there.  My next decision surprises me to this day.  I had three months until we would be returning to Canada and I decided to finish my Competent Communicator manual during this time.  That was 13 weeks to finish 10 speeches, which meant I had to speak at almost every meeting!  Don’t hold back Caron.  I presented this to my club and thank them to this day for being flexible and accommodating my goal.  There is no turning back now Caron, let’s get at ‘er!

I did finish my manual, I was nervous giving every speech, I did receive great feedback and support to help me in my speaking journey, and I absolutely did face a huge fear.  Good grief, looking back I would have never thought I would have done this.  The ripple effect of “not holding back” has been incredible.  I was honored last November by receiving the club’s Outstanding Toastmaster award.  I have confidence and continue on my Toastmasters journey in BC.  I have the proof and validation that anyone can face their fears.  No matter our age, our situation, our limiting beliefs or what others think.

Last month, my Waikiki Toastmasters story was featured in the Member Achievements Section of the Toastmasters International magazine.  How exciting, what a journey for me and what a message of hope for absolutely anyone else.  I encourage you to simply believe because the only one holding us back is ourselves.

To facing fears, growing and moving forward,

Caron

It’s a small world after all…….

Love it, like it or somewhere on the opposite end of the spectrum, the song “It’s a Small World” written by the Sherman Brothers for Walt Disney’s attraction of the same name is claimed to be the most performed and translated piece of music on earth.  To that, I say wooohooo, haha and zip-a-dee-doo-dah!!

I am going to admit that It’s a Small World is one of my favourite Disney rides.  It never ceases to make me tear up, hearing these lyrics (yes, over and over and over again during the 15 minute or so ride) sung by animated dolls in their native language and seeing all the different countries represented with traditional costumes and unique cultural items.

Small World

The overall theme of the attraction is that of global peace and unity.  I’m sure most of you would agree that we need that more than ever in the world.  I recently read a statistic that stated there are 20 million people talking about what’s wrong in the world and approximately 2 million talking about what’s right.  How someone came up with those numbers, I’m not sure.  What it does indicate and I both hear and see signs of this far too often, is that many of us focus on the negative instead of celebrating the positive.  I am not saying there are not serious issues in the world; we all know that there are.  But by focusing on optimism, hope, love and compassion, and taking action with those values, we can create really good changes.

We are all so connected, there’s so much that we share and many of us forget that.  We get wrapped up in chaos that we sometimes create ourselves; in our lives of stuff and more stuff; we judge without seeking to understand; we don’t enjoy the present moment because we are focusing on the past or the future.  We forget that today is a gift, to be grateful, that goodness and kindness transforms lives, and that the people who cross our paths are just…..like……us.  They have stories and struggles.  They laugh like us, they cry like us, they have fears like us and they have hope like us.

Despite the fact that mountains divide and oceans are wide, how often have you heard it said that it’s a small world?  I bet that most of you have at some point in your life with the people you have met or situations you have been in.  The kindness of strangers, or you meet someone who knows someone you know or has been somewhere you have been, or you cross paths with someone who has common interests, or your heart and soul is captivated, and perhaps changed by the stories of another person, group of people or culture.

I am going to close today’s writing with this powerful and amazing statement…….a smile means friendship to everyone.  What’s really awesome is that a smile is free, costs nothing, zippo, totally BONUS.  It’s the best accessory that any of us can wear and definitely a gift we give another person (plus it makes us feel super dooper happy!)  A smile is an international sign of peace and friendship.  It crosses all language barriers, generations and cultures.  So go on, give it a try.  Smile more often than you do now at those amazing people who you encounter today.  Be that “good change” the world needs because it truly is a small world and we are all in it together.

To global peace, love and good changes,

Caron

It’s not over yet baby:   I bet, I just totally bet you were either singing or humming “It’s A Small World” while reading this story.  Come on, admit it.  And right now you’re smiling, because you feel really, really gooooooood.   And yes, I bet the song is stuck in your head now……you may as well just keep singing it my friend…….just go with it………just go with it all!   You’re welcome 🙂

FLOWER POWER…….something to celebrate!

Welcome to Flower Power where the saying goes:  “Wear happy, share happy, be happy”.  Simple as that.  These happiness blooms are created with love and aloha by me!

For many years now, I have worn a flower in my hair.  Funny thing is that I am from the prairies in Canada and regularly started wearing a flower in my hair in the winter after a tropical holiday we took.  Totally non-typical and out of place.  I think that’s what I liked about it……it made me feel happy and reminded me that it truly is a good life, wherever you are!

I would get many comments from people when they saw me still wearing a flower months later.  I rarely went out in public without it.  The flower continued to make me feel grateful and happy, and I know it made other people feel happy too.  It’s at the point now where if I’m not wearing my flower, people who know me will ask if there is something wrong.  It’s as second nature to me as brushing my teeth and having random dance parties.

So this is where things get fun.  I have decided to share the happiness.  Cuz like who made the rule that says you should only wear a flower when you’re on a tropical holiday?  That rule totally needs to be broken!!

Each flower is on a clip so you can put them in your hair, on your hat, on your cat, on your headband, on your lapel, on your lampshade, or whatever flips your clip!  They are $12 Cdn (taxes in) plus shipping and packaged up all special and fun.  I have a large selection of sizes and colors depending on what flowers are available and make me stop in my tracks with stars in my eyes.  Oh and because you are so special and unique and awesome, each flower also includes a handwritten message of aloha just for YOU.  Baby, you’re worth it!

To order “A Happiness Flower” go to my website www.goodandkindcompany.com/Good Projects/Flower Power.
There is information and a link for you there.  You’ll also see me out and about at markets, swap meets, craft shows, festivals, parties, parades and maybe one day, in my “happiness bus”.  Yeah, that is so going to happen!

Make sure you join my mailing list on the home page of my website so you will be updated of new merchandise launches and other “fun and happy” happenings.

Happiness.  Positively!  (Let’s keep this movement “moving” my friends….)

With aloha,

Caron

Ps.  I am sooooo excited to tell you that I am bringing in a huge assortment of tropical flowers from Hawaii and I will post pictures to let you know when those are available!

Happy Aloha Friday – Choose HAPPY.

It’s Aloha Friday today so happy Aloha Friday to YOU and absolutely everyone!

We have fond memories of our year in Hawaii…..the friendships, the experiences, the stunning views, the mana (good energy) and definitely the aloha spirit.  Aloha Friday would be the equivalent to what we refer to as “casual Fridays”.  Typically, people will wear their aloha attire to work and it’s of course a time for many to acknowledge the end of a work week.   Wooohooo!  Aloha Fridays involve “get together’s”, celebrations and all things happy.  This is something that people anywhere and everywhere can do.

I invite you to make it a happy Aloha Friday, a happy Friday, a happy day today and any day that you choose.  Choose to see the good, choose optimism, choose gratitude, choose to do good, choose aloha and choose happy wherever you are.  Magical things happen to us and to others when we make that choice……

To happy dances and joyful prances,

Caron

August 8 is Global Infinite Possibilities Day. Start with love!

Today, August 8, 2016 has been declared Global Infinite Possibilities Day!  In the words of the inspiring Mike Dooley (www.tut.com) and his incredible team who gave this vision “wings”:

“August 8 is a day of double 8’s. Just imagine the possibilities on a day with two infinity signs in it! Let’s do something fun and flood the web with wonderful insights, goals and dreams, and images that represent infinite possibilities in your life! This is a time to breathe fresh, positive energy and desires into the world.”

I had the privilege of taking 2 courses from Mike Dooley over the past 3 years:  Playing the Matrix and Infinite Possibilities – The Art of Living Your Dreams.  I became a certified trainer at the Infinite Possibilities training in Boston in 2014 and that was most certainly a huge step in my personal transformation.  Although I was on a path of self-discovery and had visions, dreams and goals, this event validated that I was indeed on the right path.  Let me be clear and transparent, I have lived a life of ups and downs, I have felt stuck, I have wondered what my path was, my purpose, had an “is this all there is” mentality, made some poor choices and decisions, didn’t speak when I should have, didn’t act when I should have, coulda/woulda/shoulda – UGH.  But when I look back, I was definitely more happy than I was sad, I was certainly more optimistic than I was pessimistic, I had a unbelievable support system of loving family & friends, I definitely danced when and where I wanted, I fought through fear to reach goals, I felt gratitude more than I felt entitlement, I valued kindness more than judgement, yeah I think I did okay.  Would you like to know the biggest epiphany for me?  Once I discovered to truly love me, things really changed.  This may sound selfish, but it’s SO necessary.

When you love yourself………your experiences, your relationship with others, and your life changes.

I have tapped into me and I feel more alive than ever.  I want to show others that it’s possible to follow your dreams, despite your age, your current situation, what others tell you, what you feel is expected of you or what you have gone through.  I want to notice people.  I want to have conversations with people.  I want to inspire and teach other’s how to tap into themselves and to be brave and to trust in their journey.  These practices have made it easier for me to deal with any challenges that come my way and we all know…….they are still going to come our way!  As it has been said, there are only 2 places of being “love or fear”.  I choose love.  I love me and when I do that, that love goes out to you.  Then it goes out into a world that needs it more than ever and it comes back to each one of us in incredible ways.  Just like the infinity sign!  Please love yourself.

One fear that I have faced is I have joined Toastmasters.  It was Mike and Andy Dooley who encouraged all of us Infinite Possibility trainers to join Toastmasters.  Even back then in Boston, I said to myself “no, that’s okay”!   This is just one example of a fear I have faced and I have lived most of my life with limiting beliefs.

What are your dreams and desires?  What limiting beliefs or fears do you have in regards to reaching those goals?

I have heard so many inspiring stories lately of people who are facing their fears, bashing their limiting beliefs and truly “living”.  I’m inspired by each and every one of you.  You know who you are…………..those who encourage children to take their shoes off and dance in the rain, those who go back to school for 6 years at age 57 to fulfill a dream of teaching music, those who start a new job at a lower pay to have a new beginning, those who absolutely start over with their head held high, those who help the under-privileged, those who nurture the ill, those who spend quality time with the elderly, those who spend quality time mentoring children, those who speak their truth, those who freely give love to all, those who finally decide they are worth a better life, those who reach to out to mend relationships, those who disconnect from unhealthy relationships, those who maintain long-term friendships, those who dedicate their time to raising beautiful and loving children, those who work long hours to provide, those who radiate optimism and hope, those who sprinkle kindness everywhere, those who choose to forgive so they may have peace, those who change their eating habits, those who change their unhealthy habits, those who truly “show up”, those who truly “notice” others, those who are patient with people who are struggling, those who treat employees with respect and gratitude, those who have fun at work, those who lead with integrity and compassion, those who share their stories of challenge and opportunity so others may learn and grow, those who believe in “good”, those who share the “good”, those who are the “good”.  I thank each and every one of you.

This may be my journey but my journey is your journey.  I want you to know that although I choose love, fear still creeps up on me with thoughts of ‘I can’t do this’, ‘I’m not good enough’, ‘I have nothing to say’, ‘I am going to be embarrassed’, ‘I MIGHT FAIL’.  That’s okay.  I acknowledge those feelings (which until recently, paralyzed me), send them on their way and celebrate that I never thought I would write, design graphics, teach a dance class, take hula lessons, finish post-secondary school 20 years later, still be able to do the splits (true story – haha!), become a Certified Laughter Leader, become an Infinite Possibilities trainer and I certainly never thought I would be brave enough to speak publicly.  But when I look back, the signs were all there.  The universe sent me loving signs until I paid attention.  The signs are there for you too.

I celebrate you.  Start with love.

Yours in infinite possibilities,

Caron

Love today.

LOVE TODAY.  LOVE THIS DAY.

Love the gift of another day, the opportunities you have, the good thoughts you can think, the kindness you can show, the choices you can make, the actions you can take.  What are you focusing on?  What are you paying attention to?  You are going to get “more of” whatever that is.

Today is over-flowing with infinite possibilities, wonderful moments and amazing people.  And you are an important part of it all!

LOVE TODAY.  LOVE AWAY!

Love yourself more, love others more.  Everyone is put into your life for a reason.  How can you grow?  What can you learn?  Reach out to people you haven’t heard from in a while who are on your mind.  Your messages don’t have to be long to be meaningful and make someone feel special.

Forgive more.  I know too many people who are holding onto resentment, grudges and bitterness.  This practice depletes our good energy, not to mention our time.  As the saying goes, “holding a grudge is letting someone live rent free in your head”.  Everyone is doing the best they can with where they are and what they know.  We don’t always know the challenges, struggles and hardships others are dealing with. Send out love and compassion and carry on with living your own good life my friends.

Love yourself more because “baby you’re worth it”!  Be kind to yourself in your thoughts, your words and your actions…..you’re going to thank yourself for this.  Trust me.

LIVE LOVE TODAY.

Tell people they matter.  The world needs that more than ever right now.  Once you start telling people that you notice them and that they are appreciated, ripples of good energy and positive vibes go out into our world.  Saying nothing sends a message too; it can speak louder than actually saying something.  It is never too late to change your behaviours and habits.  Let today be that day for you.

In love and positive change,

Caron

Celebrating moments that turn into awesomeness….

Some moments turn out way more awesome than we can imagine.

Fun things are fun!  Laughter is contagious!!  No permission needed for whimsy!!!  Some moments turn into unexpected awesomeness.  This was one of those times……

Laughter, fun and whimsy connect us as human beings, keep us YOUNG, release stress, build relationships and create all sorts of wonderful magic in our lives.

I was recently visiting my mom and grandma before a speaking event in Saskatchewan.  Mom and I try our best to meet at grandmas as often as we can (we all live in different communities).  Our get-togethers most often involve catching up, sharing in meals, a few interesting games of rummy (guess who wins most often?), a lot of laughs, a little bit of mischief, some naptime and simply sharing in our time together.

I decided we should all sport “a good life” shirt a get a 3 generation picture.  What happened next is something I can’t explain exactly.  You can see from the progression of pictures that it was an absolute explosion of uncontrollable laughter between my mom and grandma.  I decided to capture a few pictures of them in action before sneaking in behind them to get in on the fun!!  Thanks to my aunt Renee who was visiting for taking the group photos.  It certainly took a while for us to be able to compose ourselves and say “cheese”!

This was one of those moments that we will all remember for a long, long time.  Laughing until we cry, feeling the joy, celebrating being together and simply living “a good life”.

Celebrate on my friends,

Caron

Woooohoooo!  My 1st launch of “A Good Life” shirts are sold out!!  Thank you to everyone who purchased one.  The 2nd edition (new design and sizes) will be available very soon.  You can sign up to be on my email list on my website (www.goodandkindcompany.com) to receive updates on products and other fun stuff!

You are an important part of the YOUNIVERSE!

It’s so fantastic to really consider the special part that each of us plays in the youniverse.  Every single one of us.

Do you ever stop and think about the many people who have crossed your path, who know someone that you know, who have been somewhere you have been, who like the same things you do?  Have you ever met people that you feel you’ve met before?  Oh yeah.  It happens in the most random places, at the most random times and circumstances when you take the time to have a dialogue with another human being.

Have you ever had a conversation with a person you just met and things go like this:  “No way!  You’ve got to be kidding.  You’re not going to believe this!”  I’m sure you have.  Woohoo, you have an instant bond and common connection with someone you hardly know.  Yep you do! This creates a positive shift in infinite ways and sends ripples of awesomeness EVERYWHERE…..far, further, farther than that far!  Because you are a very important part of the youniverse and so are they.

It’s really big out there, but we are all connected.

We are all right here, right now, together.  That’s kinda cool, and presents all sorts of fun and interesting possibilities.  So get out there and make sure you take the time to talk.  To anyone, to everyone.  Be curious.  Be present.  Be brave.  Be non-judgemental.  Be compassionate.  Be understanding.  Be kind.  Be love.  Seek to understand.  Learn.  Grow.  Carry on.  Create some awesomeness in this amazing youniverse!

Can’t wait to meet YOU out there,

Caron
